A Small Act is an HBO Documentary film that airs tonight– Monday, July 12th — at 9:00 p.m. The film is a wonderfully inspiring and compelling story that every adult and teen should see.
As an impoverished boy in Kenya, Chris Mburu’s life was dramatically changed when an anonymous Swedish woman sponsored his primary and secondary education. Now a Harvard-educated human-rights lawyer, Chris hopes to replicate the generosity he once received by founding his own scholarship fund to aid a new generation. With clarity and grace, the film bears cinematic witness to the lasting ramifications of a small ripple of human kindness. A Small Act inspires one to take a chance—and change a life.
The film also chronicles the lives of some of the applicants to Chris’ scholarship foundation and gives the viewer an inside perspective of the important role that education plays in advancing not only a family but a country. In many ways you will see a parallel between the lives and fates of undereducated young people in the US, to the lives of the young people in the remote Kenyan village.
Watch the movie tonight and tune in later to discuss and post your views on the film. As Chris’ example of reaching back to raise a village demonstrates so poignantly the ripple effect of a small act of kindness, perhaps we can find a similar way to help the local Harlem schools that are suffering, and the scores of children who are trying hard to be successful in spite of their odds.
